What is Kart Racing? --Kart racing is one of the fastest growing and economical forms of motor sports and also happens to be a very family oriented and extremely fun activity. At any of the kart races you will see moms and dads, brothers and sisters working together on the family drivers' kart preparing for the next on-track session. That driver could be any one or more of those family members. Karting is a great tool for learning life skills as well, including self-discipline, patience, and sportmanship. It also turns out that the vast majority of the world's top race drivers got their starts in Karting!
-
These aren't your typical rental karts are they? --The karts that you can rent on any summer day have their speed restricted to a maximum of 35kph. Racing karts for the most part, use modified engines and are capable of speeds from 60kph to 90kph! Speeds for the younger drivers are of course the slowest, but even at these speeds, the wheel to wheel racing action is thrilling.
-
What age can I start racing? --Drivers can start racing as young as 8 years of age. You are never to old to race either. Classes are structured so that age groups compete against each other. It isn't unusual for drivers over the age of forty to start racing as Dad or Mom get the racing bug as well.
-
Which is the best class to start racing? --Younger drivers are usually encouraged to hone their racing skills in some of the lower horsepower/speed classes. These classes require a driver to be smooth in order to be fast. Valuable racing experience, even for older rookie drivers, can be gained in Novice before moving into Junior. That experience can be transfered to the higher horsepower classes as a driver progresses.
-
What do I need to get started? --The first thing to get would be a kart and engine. There are many used karts, with or without engines available for sale. There are many brands of chassis on the market, with the majority being from Europe. Visit your local dealers or use our classified section on our website to see the kinds of chassis and used equipment is available. Try to find one of those brands that are one or two years old. Be sure to inspect the chassis carefully for damage or cracks. You will also need a kart racing suit, gloves, rib vest, shoes, neck collar, and of course a helmet. Helmets must carry a minimum of Snell 2000 designation. ASN requires participates to submit a Medical at the beginning of the season.
-
How much will this cost? --A good used 4-cycle package will cost anywhere from $2000.00 - $3000.00 depending on condition and the number of spare parts in the package. In many cases, you will find a complete package including many spare parts, gears, and just about everything else you need to get started. Packages are sometimes available including a trailer, tools and all the safety equipment. New helmets are usually $200.00 and up, race suits $250.00 and up, gloves run about $80.00, rib vest $$80.00 approx., and good running shoes will do although some choose racing shoes. Neck collars about $50.00 Joining a club is usually $100.00 with race fees in the $50.00 range. Tires are $220-240.00/set and usually last a season. Engine overhaul, maintenance and oil, etc. would add in the neighborhood of $600.00 for a 4-cycle class.
